A day in Funchal

My mind dances then wanders, filled with hopes of days and special moments, of sun-filled glades, and sweet madeira wine.

Our favourite stop off on the MSC cruise was Funchal in Madeira. We had breakfast on board then decided to explore.  The weather was glorious, which I wasn't quite dressed for, but we didn't let that stop us.

The town was readying for the Fiesta/Carnival, but we actually didn't see much of it.  It lent the town a nice bustling atmosphere and we had a good stroll (and a bit of a shop).

The seafront has been rebuilt in the last 5 years after terrible rains washed away a lot of land.  Its very open, clean and tourist friendly which made getting about in our limited time quite easy. There's a cable car up to the top of the mountains, but we chickened out of that.

In the evening we went back out, refreshed and re dressed (although it was super windy) and headed out for dinner. We found a cute, traditional restaurant called Pipa.  Our waitress was very friendly and generous and we had shots of liquor, honey biscuits and a good chat before we returned to the boat.

Have you been to Funchal? Did you like it?
